In plain words, what is an EMP?
An Electromagnetic Pulse is an intense, super-fast, pulse of electrons that may shock electronics to the point of destruction. Modern electronics with transistors and computers cannot withstand this pulse as it shorts out all silicon junctions leaving them beyond repair. Older vacuum tubes could survive this pulse since they normally operate at higher voltages by design.
What causes an EMP?
A damaging and wide-spread EMP may be created by a High-Altitude Nuclear Blast at an altitude outside Earth’s atmosphere. Some countries have dedicated EMP Weapons to shut down an enemy’s electrical grid and modern conveniences. Of course, this would be an act of war. A very local EMP can be generated with a huge electrical or magnetic jolt from a huge magnetic device.
What to expect during and after an EMP?
Unless it happens at night, most people will not see the nuclear blast in space. The pulse is extremely fast (in nanoseconds). All transistor operated devices will stop operating such as: computers, cellphones, radios, transmitters, electric service, newer automobiles, medical equipment, testing equipment, trains, planes, and about anything using electrical energy.
What about Solar Flare Damages?
A CME or Coronal Mass Ejection is similar to a EMP in the potential destruction that it can cause. It only happens naturally as the Sun emits an intense Solar Blast toward the Earth. Just as in an EMP, a CME will deliver a hard punch to the same Modern Electronics; however, with a CME, the pulse is at a lower frequency and lasts for a longer period of time from seconds to minutes before dissipating away.
How can I mitigate CME damage?
CME is a natural event from the Sun. One benefit of the distance to the Sun is delay before a solar flare is emitted until it reaches the Earth. Astronomers are constantly monitoring the surface of the Sun for Corona Emissions and warning us on Earth before the Flares arrive. The use of Faraday shielding, and disconnection will protect most all our equipment to offer the best outcome.
